Our Pick: Which Garmin Edge Should You Buy?
- Edge Explore 3 ($399.99) if you ride for fitness, touring or commuting plus mostly want maps, turn-by-turn directions plus safety features. According to Garmin’s Oct 20, 2026 announcement it gets a 3-inch 360 x 640 touchscreen, up to 16 hours of battery in demanding use plus 32 GB of storage.
- Edge Explore 3 Plus ($499.99) if you want to keep your hands on the bars. The extra $100 buys a built-in speaker plus microphone for voice commands, voice messages through the Garmin Messenger app plus spoken navigation prompts. Garmin rates it at up to 14 hours in demanding use.
- Edge 1060 ($799.99) if you train with power, ride long days or want the biggest screen. It has a 3.5-inch 480 x 800 display, up to 20 hours of demanding-use battery, 64 GB of storage, physical buttons in addition to the touchscreen plus reverse charging for lights or a phone.

What Garmin Announced on October 20, 2026
Garmin released two announcements from Olathe, Kansas through PR Newswire on the same morning. The first introduced the Edge Explore 3 plus the Edge Explore 3 Plus, which Garmin describes as easy-to-use GPS cycling computers with ride data, maps plus alerts on a touchscreen. The second introduced the Edge 1060, which Garmin calls its newest premium cycling computer.
Both releases say the products are available now. On October 26, 2026 the Garmin U.S. store showed the Edge Explore 3 as available to ship in 3 to 5 weeks, the Explore 3 Plus in 5 to 8 weeks plus the Edge 1060 in 1 to 3 business days.
The common thread is voice. The Explore 3 Plus plus the Edge 1060 both have a speaker plus a microphone. Garmin’s examples of spoken commands include asking for a route to the nearest coffee shop, asking for your heart rate plus reporting a pothole. The speaker also works as a digital bike bell to alert pedestrians.
Edge Explore 3 vs Explore 3 Plus: The $100 Difference
On Garmin’s spec pages the two Explore 3 models share the same body: 53.8 x 104.5 x 18.0 mm, IPX7 water rating, a 3-inch 360 x 640 liquid crystal touchscreen, 32 GB of internal storage plus up to 48 hours in battery saver mode. The base model weighs 118.8 g. The Plus weighs 121.5 g.
The difference is the speaker plus microphone. With the Plus you can request a new route, ask for in-ride stats, report a road hazard plus change screens by voice. You can send voice messages through the on-device Garmin Messenger app when paired with a compatible phone, plus hear incoming messages read out loud. Garmin notes that voice command performance may vary with riding conditions plus is available in select languages.
The trade-off is battery. Garmin lists up to 16 hours in demanding use for the Explore 3 against up to 14 hours for the Explore 3 Plus. If your longest rides are under 10 hours, that gap is unlikely to matter. If you ride all day, the base model is the safer choice.
Features Shared by Both Explore 3 Models
- Route options. Choose between suggested routes based on ride time, total elevation plus bike type.
- Up Ahead. Pick the points of interest you care about, such as coffee shops or restrooms, plus see the nearest ones along a route.
- Road hazard alerts. See potholes, road closures plus aggressive animals reported by other Garmin cyclists, plus add your own. This needs a paired phone with the Garmin Connect app.
- Free Flow Routing. Find routes with fewer stops, intersections or slowdowns.
- Pin drop navigation. Send a pin from Google Maps or Apple Maps on your phone to the Edge plus get a bike-specific route.
- Garmin Cycling Coach. Free personalized plans for beginners that adapt to performance plus recovery when used with a compatible Garmin watch or heart rate monitor.
- Garmin Link. After pairing once, a compatible Garmin watch connects automatically to show wrist-based heart rate.
- eBike support. Connect to systems such as Bosch smart systems or SHIMANO E-Bike systems to see battery status plus assist level.
- Safety. LiveTrack location sharing, incident detection, weather alerts plus compatibility with Varia radars plus smart lights.
Where the Edge 1060 Fits
The Edge 1060 is the step up for riders who train seriously. Garmin’s spec page lists a 3.5-inch 480 x 800 touchscreen, 58.5 x 107 x 16.3 mm, 142 g, IPX7, a built-in speaker plus microphone, 64 GB of internal storage plus up to 20 hours in demanding use or 60 hours in battery saver mode. The release mentions added buttons for use with gloves or in bad weather.
Beyond the Explore features, Garmin lists Route Previews with distance, estimated ride time, traffic plus reported hazards before you start. Training tools include real-time stamina, power guide, cycling ability plus course demands. TrainingPeaks workouts can sync automatically. GroupRide detection lets you join a nearby GroupRide session for in-ride messaging plus live locations. Reverse charging can top up a Varia light or a phone with a compatible USB-C cable, though Garmin says it is not intended to charge while riding.
At $799.99 it costs roughly twice as much as the Explore 3. If you do not use a power meter or structured training, most of that money goes to features you will not touch. If you do, the screen size, battery plus buttons are the practical upgrades.

The Japan Angle: SHIMANO eBikes plus Garmin’s Japanese Lineup
Garmin’s releases describe Garmin International as a subsidiary of Garmin Ltd., which is incorporated in Switzerland with principal subsidiaries in the United States, Taiwan plus the United Kingdom. The Japanese connection is on the bike itself. Garmin names SHIMANO E-Bike systems as one of the eBike platforms the Explore 3 can read battery status plus assist level from. SHIMANO, based in Sakai near Osaka, is the Japanese component maker best known for bicycle drivetrains.
Garmin’s Edge units are also sold in Japan through official channels. On October 26, 2026 Amazon.co.jp carried the Edge Explore 2 Power with a Japan official product label in its title. For riders who split time between Japan plus the U.S., the Edge line keeps the same menus plus the Garmin Connect account on both sides of the Pacific.

Buyer’s Considerations

- Many connected features need your phone. Garmin footnotes road hazard alerts, voice messages plus LiveTrack as requiring a paired smartphone with the Garmin Connect app.
- Coaching needs a sensor. Adaptive Garmin Cycling Coach plans work when riding with a compatible Garmin smartwatch or heart rate monitor.
- Shipping times differ. On October 26, 2026 the Edge 1060 shipped fastest from Garmin, while the Explore 3 Plus had the longest wait.
- Charge your other gadgets too. For long rides with a phone on navigation duty, our portable charger guide covers compact Japanese-brand power banks.
