A long-haul flight, a crying baby two rows back, a noisy cabin fan. This is the moment a premium pair of noise-cancelling headphones earns its price.
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is Sony’s current flagship. Its price has moved a lot this year. SoundGuys reported an Amazon deal of $398 on August 3, 2026, against a $459.99 retail price. In October 2026 it sits around $458 on Amazon again, so many shoppers are asking if it is still worth paying full price.
We compared the WH-1000XM6 with its older sibling, the WH-1000XM5, plus the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). We used published specs, maker information along with Amazon.com listings. We did not do our own listening tests, so this guide sticks to what the makers state.
Our Pick: Which Noise-Cancelling Headphones to Buy
- Sony WH-1000XM6 — around $458 on Amazon — best all-rounder: new QN3 chip, 12 mics, folds for travel.
- Sony WH-1000XM5 — launched at a $399 list price — the value route: same 30-hour battery, LDAC, lighter at about 250 g.
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) — $449 list price on bose.com — best for movies: Immersive Audio plus Cinema Mode.

What Changed From the XM5 to the XM6
Sony’s 1000X line started in October 2016 with the MDR-1000X, according to a Sony Japan interview with the product team. The WH-1000XM5 followed in May 2022. The WH-1000XM6 arrived in spring 2025 as the sixth generation, the first full refresh in three years.
Sony Japan points to four big changes. First, a new QN3 noise-cancelling processor that Sony says runs more than seven times faster than the older QN1. Second, 12 microphones for noise sensing, up from 8 on the XM5. Third, sound tuning done with outside mastering engineers, including engineers from Sterling Sound plus Coast Mastering. Fourth, the folding hinge is back, which Sony’s planners say many users asked for.
On the spec sheet, a lot stays the same. Both models use a 30 mm driver, both list up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, both take about 3.5 hours to fully charge. The XM6 adds LC3 for LE Audio on top of SBC, AAC plus LDAC.
Sony WH-1000XM6 (Around $458 on Amazon)

The XM6 is Sony’s current flagship. Sony Japan says the QN3 chip works with 12 microphones. On its Amazon listing, Sony says the Adaptive NC Optimizer adjusts to outside noise, air pressure plus how you wear the headphones, even with a hat or glasses.
Picture a red-eye flight. You fold the XM6 into its compact case, which Sony says has a magnetic closure, then slide it into the seat pocket. Sony Japan says the folding parts use metal made by metal injection molding for durability. At about 254 g, it weighs only a few grams more than the XM5.
Battery life is up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, or up to 40 hours with it off, per Sony Japan’s spec sheet. A 3-minute charge gives up to 3 hours of play with an optional USB-PD adapter. For calls, Sony lists a six-mic AI beamforming system to keep your voice clear on a windy street.
In Japan, the 1000X name carries real weight. Sony Japan describes the line as built on one idea since 2016: the best sound anywhere, with any content. It also notes that Sony launched the world’s first consumer noise-cancelling headphones in 1992. On Amazon.com, the XM6 holds 4.2 out of 5 stars from 3,860 ratings.
Downside: the price. At around $458, it costs well above the XM5’s $399 launch price. SoundGuys tracked it at $398 in August 2026, so a patient buyer may save about $60 by waiting for a sale.
Sony WH-1000XM5 (Launched at a $399 List Price)

The XM5 launched in May 2022. What Hi-Fi lists its launch price at $399. Its Amazon.com price was not visible to our checker in October 2026, so check the button below for today’s price.
Sony Japan says the XM5 pairs the QN1 noise-cancelling chip with an Integrated Processor V1 to control 8 microphones. Its Auto NC Optimizer tunes noise cancelling to your fit plus your surroundings. Codec support is SBC, AAC plus LDAC, with multipoint pairing to two devices.
Picture a home office with a loud washing machine down the hall. The XM5 gives you the same 30-hour rated battery as the XM6 with noise cancelling on, at about 250 g. It also supports the same 3-minute quick charge for about 3 hours of play.
In Japan, Sony still sells the XM5 on its own Sony Store next to the XM6. In the XM6 developer interview, a Sony Japan product planner named the XM5 as one of the most memorable models in the series. On Amazon.com it has 4.2 out of 5 stars from 20,184 ratings, the largest rating count of the three here.
Downside: it does not fold up. What Hi-Fi notes the XM5 only folds flat, so its case takes more room in a backpack than the XM6’s case.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, 2nd Gen ($449 List Price)

Bose is the American rival here. What Hi-Fi lists the Bose QC Ultra line among the XM5’s main rivals. Bose lists the QC Ultra 2nd Gen at $449 on bose.com. Its Amazon.com price was not visible to our checker in October 2026.
Its big extra is Bose Immersive Audio, which places sound in front of you instead of inside your head. A new Cinema Mode is tuned for video. Picture a tablet movie on a train: dialog stays clear while effects spread around you. Modes are Quiet, Aware, Immersion plus Cinema, with CustomTune to adapt sound to your ears.
Bose lists up to 30 hours of play, or 23 hours with Immersive Audio on. A 15-minute charge gives about 3 hours. It uses Bluetooth 5.4. Over USB-C it can take 16-bit audio at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, which Bose calls lossless. It weighs 0.583 lb, about 264 g, so it is the heaviest of the three.
On Amazon.com it holds 4.2 out of 5 stars from 2,993 ratings. Bose also supports the aptX Adaptive codec with Snapdragon Sound sources, according to its own product page.
Downside: real battery life may be shorter than the headline. A footnote on Bose’s own page reports test results of up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off, or up to 18 hours with it on. There is also no LDAC support for Sony or Android users who want it.

Choose the WH-1000XM6 if you fly often or carry headphones every day. The folding hinge, compact case plus newest noise-cancelling chip make it the most complete travel pair here. If the price is near $458, it may be worth waiting for a sale like the $398 deal SoundGuys reported in August.
Choose the WH-1000XM5 if you mostly listen at home or at a desk. You get the same rated battery, LDAC plus multipoint at what has usually been a lower price. The bigger case matters less if it rarely leaves your bag.
Choose the Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen if you watch a lot of movies or shows on the go. Immersive Audio plus Cinema Mode are its main draw. Just plan for shorter battery life when Immersive Audio is on.
Summary
The WH-1000XM6 is the best all-round pick for travelers, thanks to its QN3 chip, 12 mics plus a folding design.
The WH-1000XM5 remains a smart value pick if you do not need the folding hinge.
The Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen is the choice for spatial movie sound, at a $449 list price.
