Fujifilm instax mini 13, instax mini 12 and instax mini 41 instant cameras side by side

Picture a holiday table: someone presses a button, a whir, then a small white card slides out while everyone leans in.

That moment is why instant cameras keep landing on gift lists. In March 2026 Fujifilm announced the instax mini 13, the follow-up to the instax mini 12. So “instax mini 13” is now a hot search, often next to the question: is the new one worth it, or should you grab the mini 12 or the retro-styled mini 41?

We compared all three on published specs, Fujifilm’s official pages plus Amazon.com listings. Short version: they share the same lens and film. The differences are the self-timer, the design and the price.

Our Pick: The Quick Answer

  • instax mini 13 — around $79.95 — newest model, adds 2-second and 10-second self-timers plus a tilt wedge in the strap. Best for most buyers.
  • instax mini 12 — around $82.99 — the proven bestseller with over 1,500 Amazon ratings. Fine if you find it cheaper or want a specific color.
  • instax mini 41 — around $110 — classic camera styling with a textured grip. Pick it for the look.

What All Three Share (And What Changed in 2026)

Fujifilm started out in Japan in 1934 as Fuji Photo Film. Its first instax mini camera, the instax mini 10, came out in 1998 together with instax mini film. Nearly three decades later, the mini line is still the entry point to the whole instax family.

Inside, these three cameras are close relatives. Fujifilm lists the same 60 mm f/12.7 lens for each, built from two elements. Shutter speed runs from 1/2 to 1/250 second, chosen automatically. The flash always fires, but its brightness adjusts to the room. Flash range is 0.3 to 2.2 m (about 1 to 7 feet).

All three use instax mini film, sold separately. Each print has a 62 x 46 mm image on a card about the size of a credit card. Want to check shots on a screen before printing, or print from your phone? Our instax mini Evo Cinema vs mini Evo vs mini Link 3 guide covers the hybrid models. A print ejects in roughly five seconds, then develops in about 90 seconds. All three run on two AA batteries, good for about 10 packs of film (100 shots) per set according to Fujifilm.

So what is new on the mini 13? Fujifilm’s page highlights two self-timer settings (2 seconds or 10 seconds) plus a small camera angle adjustment piece built into the wrist strap. Slip it under the camera to tilt it up a little for a group shot, no tripod needed. The Amazon listing also notes a rounded body with a metallic logo.

The mini 13 is the safest gift in this group. You twist the lens to switch it on, twist again for Close-up Mode, then press the shutter. There are no settings to learn. Exposure plus flash are handled for you.

The headline change is the self-timer. Picture a family photo by the tree: set the camera on a shelf, tuck the strap wedge under the front so the lens tilts up, flip the timer to 10 seconds, then walk into the frame. The 2-second setting helps in a different way. Fujifilm says it cuts blur in handheld shots, since your finger is off the button when the shutter fires.

Close-up Mode works from 30 to 50 cm (about 12 to 20 inches). The viewfinder corrects for parallax, so your subject stays centered on the print. There is also a small selfie mirror next to the lens. Fujifilm lists the body at 105.5 x 124.7 x 67.6 mm, about 327 g with film plus strap but no batteries. It is a chunky handful, sized for a tote bag more than a jeans pocket.

Colors are Dreamy Purple, Frost Blue, Candy Pink, Lagoon Green plus Clay White. Fujifilm’s US store lists it at $89.95, so the Amazon price of around $79.95 was below list when we checked. The camera has 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

Downside: it is very new on Amazon.com, with only 33 ratings so far. That is a small sample next to the mini 12. Image quality should also not differ from the mini 12, since the lens plus shutter specs are the same. You are paying for the timer, not sharper prints.

The mini 12 is the camera the mini 13 replaces. It has the same twist-to-start lens, the same Close-up Mode with parallax correction, the same selfie mirror plus automatic exposure. Hand someone a mini 12 or a mini 13 at a party. The shooting feels almost identical.

Its strongest point is its track record. The Amazon listing shows 4.6 out of 5 stars from 1,564 ratings, far more than the newer models. If you like buying what many others already own, that matters.

Fujifilm lists it at 104 x 66.6 x 122 mm. Its 306 g figure is measured without batteries, strap or film, so it is close to the mini 13 in the hand. Colors are pastel: Pastel Blue, Mint Green, Blossom Pink, Lilac Purple plus Clay White.

Downside: Fujifilm’s spec list for the mini 12 does not include a self-timer, while the mini 13 has two. On top of that, the Amazon price was about $3 higher than the newer mini 13 when we checked. Unless you find it on sale, the older model is hard to justify.

instax mini 41 (Around $110 on Amazon)

The mini 41 is for people who want an instant camera that looks like a “real” camera. Fujifilm describes a classic, vintage-inspired design with a textured body for grip plus a metallic-look finish. The dark body with orange accents reads more grown-up than the pastel mini 12 or mini 13.

Under the styling, the core is familiar. It uses the same 60 mm f/12.7 lens, the same 1/2 to 1/250 second shutter plus the same flash range. Close-up Mode covers 0.3 to 0.5 m with parallax correction, so the viewfinder shifts its target to keep near subjects centered. There is a selfie mirror too.

Fujifilm lists it at 104.5 x 122.5 x 67.5 mm, about 345 g with film plus strap but no batteries. That makes it the heaviest of the three by a small margin. The grip texture helps here: your fingers have something to hold on a cold evening walk.

Downside: at around $110 on Amazon it costs about $30 more than the mini 13, yet the prints come from the same lens. Fujifilm’s spec list for the mini 41 does not mention a self-timer either. It has 4.4 out of 5 stars from 337 ratings, the lowest score of the three, though still solid.

Buy the mini 13 if you want one simple answer. It is the newest, it was the cheapest of the three on Amazon when we checked, plus it is the only one here with a listed self-timer. For a teen, a college student or a family that wants group photos, it is the easy pick.

Buy the mini 12 only if it drops below the mini 13 on sale, or the person on your list wants one of its pastel colors, like Mint Green. It still takes the same prints.

Buy the mini 41 if looks matter most. It is the one an adult who likes film cameras will want to carry. You pay extra for design, not for better pictures.

Summary

The instax mini 13 is the best buy for most people in 2026: newest, lowest Amazon price of the three, plus a 2 s / 10 s self-timer.
The mini 12 is a proven camera but now makes sense only on a deeper discount.
The mini 41 is the style pick, with the same lens in a classic textured body for about $30 more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the instax mini 13, mini 12 and mini 41 use the same film?

Yes. All three take instax mini instant film, sold separately. Each print has a 62 x 46 mm image. Square or Wide instax film will not fit these cameras.

Does the instax mini 13 take better photos than the mini 12?

Not on paper. Fujifilm lists the same 60 mm f/12.7 lens plus the same 1/2 to 1/250 second shutter for both. The mini 13 adds self-timers, which can help with group shots or steadier handheld photos.

What batteries do these cameras need?

Two AA alkaline batteries. Fujifilm says one set lasts about 10 packs of film. Two AA batteries come in the box with each camera, per the Amazon listings.

How long does a print take to develop?

The print comes out in about five seconds. Fujifilm says it then develops in about 90 seconds, a bit longer or shorter depending on the temperature.

Which instax mini is the best gift for a teenager?

The mini 13 fits most teens well. It is simple to use, comes in five colors such as Candy Pink or Lagoon Green, plus its self-timer makes group selfies easy without a friend holding the camera.
